In the summer of 1990, my eldest son loaded up his second-hand Nissan Sentra with “dorm” stuff, and took off for the greatest adventure of his young life... the trials and tribulations of college days at Louisiana State University. Two years later, our twin daughters repeated the same event, taking off in different directions across the country, full of hope and excitement.
Ten years after this, and $400,000 “lighter,” my wife and I proudly sat in the basketball arena at the University of New Orleans as our fourth child marched to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance to receive both his MBA and Masters in International Business degrees.
We had lived through the ups and downs of our children changing “majors” every other day as they tried to select a career that would bring them fame, fortune, and happiness. With diplomas finally in hand, they then faced the nightmare of preparing to go out in the world and actually find a job!
It was amazing to us how unprepared, untutored, and “clueless” they were about the basic, simple rules of preparing for interviews. The more we listened to their struggles, and those of their friends and classmates, the more we realized that formalized, instructional information for these young people, brought together in a personalized, hands-on format, simply did not exist.
We gathered the opinions of our friends and business associates, conducted research nationwide, and determined that graduates today have little or no direction on how to sell themselves effectively to prospective employers in the real world!
That’s how College to Career Guidance Seminars began, and our mission is very simple:
“To provide a comprehensive guidance program
for the development of personal skills and job
seeking techniques necessary for graduating
college students as they prepare to enter the job
market in today’s business world.”
All too many young people face the bitter disappointment of not finding the “perfect fit” for their skills and talents. Failing to impress employers because they don’t know how to prepare, dress, speak or display their enthusiasm for the organization, they wind up “settling” for a job out of panic and desperation. We believe our professional career preparation program can make a difference in their lives.
